Ellen & Liz

That Too Designs is a women and LGBTQ+ owned family business committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable, and personalized clothing services. With 20 years of experience, our goal is to serve diverse communities by creating custom pieces, upcycling cherished items, and offering handcrafted products. We prioritize community-building, sustainability, and convenience, with services including pick-up and delivery, online pattern and craft sales, and educational opportunities.

Our Story

At That Too, we proudly carry forward a cherished saying from Ellen's late husband, Liz's father: "That too." This simple phrase encapsulated a world of meanings, embodying an understanding that he could relate to, or that he, too, could accomplish whatever challenge lay ahead. It reflects the spirit of possibility and creativity that defines our family legacy.

As a family of makers and crafters, we firmly believe that with the right supplies and a sprinkle of imagination, there is nothing we cannot create. Liz brings over 30 years of visionary thinking and creative flair to our endeavors, paired with more than a decade of valuable business and legal experience. Her innovative ideas and strategic insights help us navigate the crafting world with intention and passion.

Ellen, with a remarkable 50 years of sewing, crafting, and technical expertise, enriches our team with her extensive knowledge and finely honed skills. Her meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to quality ensure that every project we undertake is crafted with love and precision.

Together, we share a profound desire to infuse joy into our work while utilizing the resources at hand. We are dedicated to building a welcoming community of fellow creators who value sustainability and the environment. Our passion lies in making a positive impact through our creations and encouraging others to join us on this journey of creativity and crafting.

At That Too, we believe in the transformative power of creativity to connect, inspire, and unite us. Join us as we explore the limitless possibilities of what we can create—because we know That Too!

For forty years, my professional life was dedicated to the pharmaceutical industry—a world of precision and rigid structure. Yet, the work that truly anchored me, and the first love I now pursue, was always crafting.

My history with creation began with my family. My mother and great-aunt taught me to knit, I learned sewing through 4H, and I taught myself to crochet in high school. These hobbies were not merely pastimes; they were the essential foundation that kept me grounded during my four decades in the workforce. Now retired, I am returning to these skills, turning my discipline to creation.

My passion is rooted in my Faith and my Family. I believe strongly in a Faith that dictates we must love and respect everyone, regardless of their viewpoint or lifestyle. This belief is what I have always worked to instill in my children and their families, and it guides the principles of my work today.

The business is named as a tribute to my late husband and our 40 years of marriage. If we were discussing something and I offered a comment to build on his idea, he would jokingly acknowledge it all by saying, “That too!” It was his way of accepting the whole picture. That phrase now represents the holistic view of this new venture—honoring our shared life and acknowledging that all my experiences, past and present, contribute to this work.

This career change is defined by service and sustainable creation. I now work closely with From The Heart Stitchers, providing handcrafted comfort items to local healthcare organizations and those that assist marginalized people. This ethos of helping others help themselves is why I also support the Heifer Project and 4Ocean; the world—both its people and its environment—requires care for survival. The upcycling and creation focus of our business is consistent with these passions.

We hope to provide a valuable service that helps you and supports the wider community.

Before you read on about me, there are a couple of key things you need to know. First, I am a recovering attorney, which means I can problem-solve quickly, but I have the habit of using a thousand words to say what could be said in ten. Second, I love bullet points. Third, I am actively obsessed with my dog, Brinkley, because, objectively, dogs are better than people. Last, my philosophy is absolute:

Everyone’s body is perfect.

It is the clothes—the poorly designed, mass-produced, unethically made, exclusionary garments—that require fixing, not the person wearing them. As a neurodivergent, pansexual, fat woman, I know from experience that the clothing industry is inherently exclusionary. While it’s advanced in the last decade, it still misses the mark for many of us.

After years of exhaustive searching for garments that fit my body and my ever-evolving identity, I decided on two things: (1) I was going to embrace a black wardrobe lifestyle that I’ve always wanted; and (2) to keep my wardrobe interesting in a fashion industry that wasn’t made for my body, the only solution was to take out my sewing machine and make the wardrobe of my dreams. This personal act of reclamation—creating clothing when none was available—is now a foundational part of That Too.

When my mother and I decided to launch That Too, the vision was clear: to build more than just a business; it was an opportunity to create ethical beauty and support a 'Softer World' that prioritizes people and the planet over profit and policy

My sense of service is deep, cultivated over more than twenty years in customer-service roles, starting at age ten. Over 36 jobs later, I continue to believe that everyone deserves dignity and respect, and I have developed a genuine joy in helping people connect with exactly what they seek.

I want to help people:

  • Navigate a world that wasn't designed for them by creating items that truly fit.

  • Find new life in old items that they love, through thoughtful upcycling and customization.

  • Love their wardrobe and their life.

In addition to making things, to support my vision of a more compassionate world, I routinely try to support organizations that align with my values.

If you’ve made it this far - I appreciate you - and Brinkley says hi!
